Kale, goji berries and quinoa are all great for boosting our health. But did you know that the world has recently turned to Africa and discovered a long list of “new superfoods” that are just as awesome for fighting disease, promoting health, and boosting immune function?

Best of all, from health freaks to chefs and foodies, everyone has found that these indigenous foods aren’t just packed with nutrients and antioxidants; they’re versatile and delicious too!

Many things go into enhancing immunity and protecting against sickness and disease. Nevertheless, the superfoods listed above are all fantastic for strengthening the body’s natural defences, and when added to a balanced diet, can help put you on the path to great health.

Pumpkin leaves

Commonly known as ugwu in Nigeria, pumpkin leaves are loaded with calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus and potassium, as well as Vitamins A, B and C. Typically used in soups, the leaves can also be steamed or sautéed for nutritious and scrumptious dishes that are perfect for reducing blood cholesterol, fighting symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, and supporting the immune system.

Amaranth

Harvested on the continent for thousands of years and known by a variety of names —  mchicha in Swahili and doodo in Uganda, among others — amaranth is high in protein and rich in the amino acid lysine, which promotes calcium absorption and increases the production of antibodies. It’s also gluten-free, makes for a great breakfast, and tastes incredible in smoothies.

Tamarind

Tamarind African foods 1

Known scientifically as tamarindus indica and ukwaju in Swahili, tamarind is rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, and has been used for generations to treat everything from constipation to malaria. Its sticky pulp, which can be added to drinks and stews, is also perfect for improving heart health, addressing electrolyte imbalances, boosting metabolism and managing weight.

Coconut

Coconut African

Like tamarind, the humble coconut is great for rehydration and restoring electrolyte levels. But there’s also so much more goodness on offer, including its ability to improve brain function and digestion, promote blood sugar control, regulate enzyme function, and boost skin health. Plus, there’s no shortage of tasty ways coconut water, milk, oil and coconut meat can be used.

Fonio

Drought-resistant and packed with B vitamins as well as iron, copper, zinc and magnesium, fonio is fast gaining popularity as “the new quinoa” due to its rice-like texture, health benefits and versatility. Traditionally made into porridge, fonio can just as easily be ground and used in cakes and cookies. Its high fibre and protein content also make it ideal for weight management.

Cinnamon bark

Cinammon African foods 1

An active ingredient in QNET’s Belite weight management formula, cinnamon has been renowned through the ages for its medicinal benefits. Loaded with antioxidants, this versatile and delicious “spice” boasts a great many benefits, from lowering blood sugar levels to even protecting against certain cancers. It’s also proven to be excellent at promoting gut health and managing weight.

Including the above nutritious superfoods in a balanced diet can greatly benefit one’s health and protect against diseases. However, for optimal and holistic results and to add years to your life, you should look to supplement and support your diet with detoxifying teas like QNET’s Belite 123 and immunity enhancers like EDG3.
